How Exchange Odds Work: Decimal Odds, Probability and Returns
Every price on an exchange tells you two things: how much you could win and how likely the market thinks an outcome is. This guide shows you how to read both.

Decimal odds show your total return per ₹1 staked, including your stake. Odds of 3.00 return ₹3 for every ₹1 — ₹1 back plus ₹2 profit.
Calculating returns
- Total return = stake × odds
- Profit = stake × (odds − 1)
| Stake | Odds | Total return | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹200 | 1.80 | ₹360 | ₹160 |
| ₹200 | 2.20 | ₹440 | ₹240 |
| ₹200 | 5.00 | ₹1,000 | ₹800 |
Odds and implied probability
You can turn any decimal price into the market’s implied chance with one division: implied probability = 1 ÷ odds.
| Odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|
| 1.25 | 80% |
| 2.00 | 50% |
| 2.50 | 40% |
| 4.00 | 25% |
| 10.0 | 10% |
Implied probability is the market’s view, not a fact. Outcomes remain uncertain, which is why no one can guarantee a result.
Why prices move
On an exchange, prices are set by players offering to back and lay. When more money arrives on one side, the price shifts. News, team line-ups, weather and in-play events (like a wicket) can all move a market quickly — and sometimes a market is briefly suspended while it settles.
The spread between back and lay
The best back price is always slightly lower than the best lay price. The gap is the spread. Busy markets usually have a tight spread; quieter markets can have a wider one.
Commission
Some exchanges charge a commission on net winnings in a market. If a platform does, your actual profit is slightly lower than the raw calculation. Check the rules on the platform you use, or ask the WhatsApp desk.
