Back and Lay Explained: How Exchange Betting Works
Back and lay are the two building blocks of every exchange, including MarathaExch. Once you understand them — and the idea of liability — the blue and pink boxes on screen stop looking confusing.

When you back an outcome, you win if it happens. Your profit is your stake multiplied by the odds minus one.
| Back ₹100 at | If it wins | If it loses |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | +₹50 | −₹100 |
| 2.50 | +₹150 | −₹100 |
| 4.00 | +₹300 | −₹100 |
Laying: betting that something won’t happen
When you lay, you take the other side of a backer’s bet. If the outcome does not happen, you win the backer’s stake. If it does happen, you pay out their profit — this is your liability.
| Lay ₹100 at | If it loses | If it wins (liability) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | +₹100 | −₹50 |
| 2.50 | +₹100 | −₹150 |
| 4.00 | +₹100 | −₹300 |
Liability formula: stake × (odds − 1). The higher the odds you lay at, the bigger your possible loss. Always check the liability figure before confirming.
Why the colours are blue and pink
Exchanges traditionally show back prices in blue and lay prices in pink. The best available price sits closest to the middle, with deeper prices further out. The small figure under each price shows how much money is available to match at that price.
What is exposure?
Exposure is the total amount you could lose across all your open bets. It is held from your balance until the market settles. If you back ₹100 on one market and lay with ₹150 liability on another, your exposure is ₹250.
Matched and unmatched bets
On an exchange, your bet must be matched with someone taking the opposite side. If you ask for a better price than is available, your bet may sit unmatched until someone accepts it — or until you cancel it.
Common beginner mistakes
- Laying at high odds without noticing the large liability.
- Confusing the back and lay columns.
- Forgetting that exposure reduces your available balance.
- Not reading the market rules for shortened or abandoned matches.

Understanding back and lay helps you make informed decisions, but it doesn’t make outcomes predictable. Set a budget and never chase losses.
